Voyagers Beat the Paddleheads to Win Series
(Great Falls, Mt. ) The Great Falls Voyagers (5-1) and Missoula Paddleheads (4-2) came into the Monday, Memorial Day, game tied atop the Northern Division. Both teams looking to not only take the 3 game series but also claim sole possession of first place.
The game started out rough for the Voyagers and the Paddleheads scored 3 runs in the top of the first inning and maintained that lead until the bottom of the third inning. The Voyagers Eddie McCabe started the 3rd off with a walk, and Adam Oviedo promptly hit a single to center. A grounder to first by Breydon Daniel got him on when the first baseman for the Paddlehead chose to get Oviedo at second. A ground ball to first by Jake Malec caused an interesting situation as the first baseman decided to run towards home, in hopes of getting McCabe in a rundown. McCabe was able to dodge an attempt by the Paddleheads first baseman at tagging him then the first baseman slipped and tried to throw McCabe out at home but threw the ball wildy away. Mcabe was safe and Daniel and Malec ended up at 3rd and 2nd. A ground ball to right field by Andy Atwood that was bobbled in right field allowed Daniel to come home and Malec to third. Malec then scored on a wild pitch giving the Voyagers 3 runs in the inning and tying the score.
The Paddleheads took the lead right back however as they scored 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning. The Voyagers squad made another valiant comeback effort however and scored 5 runs in the 5th inning.
The inning started with three single by Oviedo, Daniel and Malec with Oviedo and Daniel scoring. Two strikeouts brought Tyler Krabbe to the plate and he singled to right to give the Voyagers a one run lead scoring Malec. Riley Jepson singled putting two runners on for Collin Runge who doubled to left center to give the Voyagers an 8-5 lead after 5.
The score stayed that way until the top of the ninth inning when the Paddleheads were able to get a runner on due to an error. With two out a walk and then a single pushed one run across bringing up the winning run to the plate. Pitcher Matt Demco was able to get the batter to pop up to Andy Atwood securing the win for the series and sole possession of first place.
The Voyagers will go on the road for 6 more games in Missoula before returning home to take on the brand new team of the Glacier Range Riders in a six game series on June 7th. Don't miss seeing the Voyagers take on the Range Riders in their inaugural season and very first visit to Centene stadium, June 7th at 7 p.m.
